You will need:

  • Micador For Artists Soft Pastels - Greys

  • Micador For Artists Charcoal Pencil - White

  • Micador Paper Stump, size 4

  • Toned Pastel Paper

  • Masking Tape

  • Micador For Artists Fixative

Step 1: Prepare!

Stick masking tape along the edges of your page. This will be used to create a thin border and will be removed later.

Step 2: Sketch!

Sketch the outline of the penguin using a white charcoal pencil. Use basic shapes to represent the different parts of the body. Use the flat edge of the ‘white’ pastel to apply a layer of colour to the background. Then use a paper stump to soften and smooth out the pastel layer.

Step 3: Fill the body!

Use the ‘coal’ coloured pastel to fill in the lower section of the penguin, then blend it with the paper stump or your finger. Use the ‘steel grey’ pastel to colour and blend the middle section, the shadowed areas of the flippers and the top segment. Then use the ‘cool grey’ for the flippers and top segment of the body.

Step 4: Fill the face!

Add ‘white’ to the face of the penguin and any other highlighted areas throughout the body. Add ‘black’ to the eyes and to the top of the head.

Step 5: Shadows and highlights!

Use the ‘black’ pastel to add shadows underneath the penguin’s flippers. Use the ‘white’ pastel and charcoal pencil to continue building highlights on the penguins body.

Step 6: Final Details!

Layer ‘white’ pastel along the bottom to create the appearance of snow. Use the charcoal pencil to add stars in the background. Apply 2 coats of fixative.
