You will need:

  • Micador for Artists Charcoal Pencils 6B and 4B

  • Micador Visual Art Diary

  • Micador for Artists Blending Stump

  • Eraser

  • Paint brush (optional, to remove eraser debris)

  • Image of an eye for reference

Step 1: Sketch outline!

Using an image for reference, sketch out light lines to shape your eye. Once happy with your outline, darken lines that sit in the darker areas.

Step 2: Darken lines!

Once happy with your outline, darken lines that sit in the darkest areas. Roughly mark out shape of pupil, ensuring you leave highlight areas.

Step 3: Shading and blending!

Start shading the medium areas. Use charcoal pencils lightly when you begin shading and slowly build up dark areas. Charcoal is much softer and darker than graphite pencils and need to be used with restraint. Use your paper stump to start blending and softening the shaded areas.

Step 4: Add Details!

Once you're happy with your eye, add finer details to your iris. Add final details including lashes and eyebrows stroke by stroke.
