An image of hair for reference

Step 1: Sketch outline!
Using an image of hair for reference, loosely sketch the main shapes of the hair. This can be quite rough and doesn't have to be perfect. Start with a H or HB pencil to ensure light lines.

Step 2: Draw strands!
Begin drawing in light hair strands where the shadows belong. Follow the shape and direction of the hair. Leave some areas untouched to act as highlights.

Step 3: Build up shadow!
Continue to build up the shadow areas using a 2B or 4B pencil. Do this by layering the shading until there is contrast between the light and dark areas.

Step 4: Add Details!
Using a HB pencil, add in extra details like loose strands of hair to make the drawing appear more realistic. Repeat this method with another section of hair.
