Tape
Black Paint (acrylic or tempera works best)
Colourfun Paintbrush
Scratching tool (toothpicks and paperclips work well)

Step 1: Create a background of colour!
Using pastels, fill a sheet of paper with a colourful pattern. There should be no white space or uncoloured areas. For best effect - try not to let the same colour touch.

Step 2: Secure your sheet
Using tape, fix your coloured sheet of paper to a larger piece of paper.

Step 3: Paint and cover with black paint
Apply a thick layer of black paint over the sheet, covering the colourful pattern. Acrylic or Tempera paint works best.

Step 4: Allow paint to completely dry
After covering the page with your black paint, allow it to dry for a couple of hours.

Step 5: Scratch out lines and shapes
Use the tip of your scratching tool to scratch out lines and draw pictures. Your colourful pastel layer beneath will show through and create a beautiful image. Scratching tool options: toothpicks, paper clips, chopsticks or a modelling tools work well!

Step 6: Some scratch art inspiration.
Try your hand at family portraits, welcome home signs, birthday cards or rainbow butterflies!
