Step 1: Shadow and shape outlines
With pastel drawings you should start with darker colours, working up to light colours in later steps. Start your sketch by marking out the shadowed areas and the orange outline of the fruit. At this point, lay colour side-by-side without blending

Step 2: Start Building up your colour
Using an orange pastel, add depth to your oranges by applying more pressure in the darker areas of the fruit. Remember to leave some areas uncoloured for highlights.

Step 3: Start to blend
Introduce yellow in the areas where light hits the fruit. Softly blend, with your finger, the parts where yellow meets orange for a more realistic and seamless look.

Step 4: Add the juicy details
Use your white pastel to go over the membrane areas or spots that feature natural-light spots. Your black pastel can also be used to go over the shadow areas. To ensure your art doesn’t smudge we recommend you seal your work with a Micador For Artists Fixative Spray.
